DURAN LANTINK WINS 2025 WOOLMARK PRIZE, PIETER MULIER RECEIVES KARL LAGERFELD AWARD

The fashion world is celebrating another remarkable achievement: during this year’s edition of the prestigious International Woolmark Prize, Dutch designer Duran Lantink claimed the top prize, while Pieter Mulier, creative director of Alaïa, received the Karl Lagerfeld Award for Innovation.

Duran Lantink, known for combining second-hand clothing, deadstock materials, and new sustainable fabrics, impressed the jury with his collection, where Merino wool played a key role. Lantink emphasized the importance of radical actions in fashion:

“Now more than ever, it’s important to be more radical. Because if we’re not radical, then what are we doing?”

His approach is rooted in deconstructing and reconstructing existing elements, allowing for the creation of new value from already existing resources. Lantink fully embraces the principles of sustainable fashion, combining modern technologies with traditional techniques like Dutch knitting. His collections not only capture attention but also carry a strong ecological message.

Pieter Mulier, as creative director of Alaïa, was recognized for his innovative approach to design, blending classic elements with modernity. His collections often explore new forms of draping the female body, balancing between sculpture and fabric artistry. Mulier emphasizes the importance of protection and freedom in fashion, concepts that are reflected in his designs.

The International Woolmark Prize is one of the most prestigious awards in the fashion world, promoting innovative uses of Merino wool. Past winners have included Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent, and Valentino Garavani. In 2025, the competition took place in a new two-year format. The winner receives AU$300,000 to further develop their brand and the opportunity to showcase their collection in top international retailers.

This year’s final featured eight designers, including Duran Lantink, who remarked:

“It’s an honor to be a finalist in the International Woolmark Prize 2025, as it reflects my brand’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development.”

The competition not only celebrates creativity but also promotes sustainable practices in the fashion industry, which are essential in addressing today’s ecological challenges.

The victories of Duran Lantink and Pieter Mulier in the 2025 International Woolmark Prize highlight the importance of innovation and sustainability in contemporary fashion. Their work proves that tradition can harmoniously coexist with modernity, and a responsible approach to design can align with high-level aesthetics.
